Surf Wax for UK and Welsh Water Temperatures
What's in the surf wax collection
Around ten bars from the three brands that actually matter. Sex Wax Quick Humps and Mr. Zogs in cold, cool, warm and tropical formulas. Sticky Bumps basecoat and temperature-specific bars. Mrs Palmers, made in Cornwall, which is handy for UK-specific conditions. We keep cold and cool water wax in stock year-round because South Wales water rarely creeps above 17 degrees, even in August. Tropical and warm water wax is for holidays or the two weeks a year the Bristol Channel forgets itself.
How to choose the right wax
Match wax to water temperature, not air. Cold water wax for anything under around 14 degrees, cool for 14 to 19, warm for 19 to 23, tropical above that. In Porthcawl you'll mostly need cold or cool. Apply a basecoat first (harder wax), then your temperature wax on top in a criss-cross or circular pattern until bumps form. Rewax every few sessions, or scrape off and restart if it goes slick, sandy or goes that yellowy brown colour. A wax comb helps.
Pairs well with
Stock up when you're restocking other basics. Works on everything in surfboards. If you prefer not to wax, look at deck grips. Throw a comb, leash and fins into the basket from surf essentials.
