Finding the Right Wetsuit for Welsh Surfing
Choosing a wetsuit isn't just about picking a brand – it's about understanding your local conditions, your surfing style, and what keeps you comfortable in the water longest. At Balsa Surf, we've spent countless hours in the Welsh surf, and we know that the right suit makes all the difference between a two-hour session and cutting it short because you're freezing.
Our Wetsuit Brands
We stock five exceptional wetsuit brands, each bringing something unique to the lineup:
Xcel – Hawaiian heritage meets cutting-edge technology. Xcel's Infiniti neoprene and quick-dry lining systems have made them favourites among serious surfers. Their TDC Thermo Dry Celliant lining reflects body heat back to you, meaning longer sessions even in February.
Vissla – Creative spirit meets high-performance design. Vissla combines eco-conscious construction with seriously stretchy neoprene. Their suits move with you, not against you, whether you're duck-diving Rest Bay or paddling out at Llangennith.
Billabong – Decades of surf culture and innovation. Billabong's Furnace range uses graphene-infused lining for exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio. Their Airlite series is perfect for warmer Welsh days when you want coverage without overheating.
Volcom – Stone-cold performance for the modern surfer. Volcom's premium limestone neoprene offers incredible stretch and durability. We've seen these suits hold up season after season, even with regular Welsh winter punishment.
Patagonia – Sustainability leaders without compromise on performance. Patagonia's Yulex natural rubber wetsuits are about as eco-friendly as it gets, using plant-based neoprene that performs just as well as petroleum-based alternatives. Fair Trade Certified too.
Wetsuit Thickness Guide for South Wales
Not sure what thickness you need? Here's what works for our local waters:
Spring/Autumn (April-May, September-October) – 3/2mm or 4/3mm suits work perfectly. Water temps hover around 12-15°C, and you'll want enough insulation for those longer sessions without overheating on sunnier days.
Summer (June-August) – 3/2mm is your friend, or even a spring suit for warmer July/August sessions. Water temps can reach 16-18°C on good years.
Winter (November-March) – 5/4mm or even 5/4/3mm is essential. Rest Bay and surrounding breaks can drop to 7-9°C, and you'll need quality neoprene, good seals, and proper thickness to stay comfortable.
Why Buy Your Wetsuit Locally?
Buying a wetsuit online can be hit-or-miss. Sizing varies between brands, and what fits perfectly on one person might be loose or restrictive on another. When you visit Balsa Surf in Porthcawl, you get:
- Proper fitting advice – We'll help you find the right size and cut for your body type
- Brand comparisons – Try on multiple brands to feel the difference in stretch and thickness

- Support local – Keep your money in the South Wales surf community
Wetsuit Care Tips
A quality wetsuit is an investment, and proper care extends its life significantly. Always rinse your suit in fresh water after each session, hang it inside-out away from direct sunlight, and use a wetsuit shampoo monthly to keep the neoprene supple and odour-free. Store it on a wide hanger to prevent shoulder creases.
