Mens Wetsuits
Wetsuits for Year-Round UK Surfing
The Welsh coast delivers surf throughout the year. The challenge is staying warm enough to enjoy it. XCEL leads the mens wetsuit range at Balsa — a brand with serious technical credentials and a reputation for quality construction that holds up season after season. Their suits use high-quality neoprene with good stretch characteristics, and they tend to keep their warmth rating longer than cheaper alternatives. Alongside XCEL, the range includes Patagonia's Yulex natural rubber suits, Billabong, Vissla, Ocean and Earth and Wetty.
Choosing the Right Suit
The right suit depends on the time of year. From April through to October a 3/2mm is typically enough for Welsh water temperatures, though some surfers prefer a 4/3mm in spring and autumn when the water is still cold from winter. From November to March you want a minimum of 4/3mm, and a 5/4mm with sealed seams and good collar fit will keep you more comfortable in the coldest months. The summer and winter wetsuit collections let you filter by season if you know exactly what you're looking for.
The Patagonia and Vissla Difference
Not all neoprene is the same. Patagonia's Yulex suits use plant-based natural rubber rather than petroleum-derived neoprene — better for the environment and comparable in warmth and stretch. Vissla's wetsuits use Geoprene recycled limestone neoprene. If the environmental impact of your kit matters to you, both are worth looking at. XCEL sits alongside them as the technical benchmark for performance and warmth retention.
