Why reef-safe matters, even in Wales
Oxybenzone and octinoxate (the active ingredients in most supermarket sunscreens) wash off in the water and contribute to coral bleaching. Wales doesn't have coral, fair enough, but the same compounds aren't great for the crabs and seaweed at Rest Bay either. Mineral sunscreens using zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the reef-safe route. They sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing, which also means they don't sting when you sweat them into your eyes, a surprisingly big deal in a wetsuit.
